History of Drayton Valley
Drayton Valley is located approximately 80 miles west of
Edmonton, Alberta. The town has a population of approximately 7000. Country
Style Mobile Home Park is located 1.5 miles from the town, on a hill overseeing
the community. Our residence enjoy our country atmosphere of large lots with the
comfort of minutes from the town.
The first settler's came to Drayton Valley in 1907. They supported
their families through trapping ,hunting and fishing. They sold their furs to the
fur traders which was in Edmonton, Alberta, which is the provinces capital city.
They would travel the 80 miles by the North Saskatchewan River which flows about
5 miles from Drayton Valley with their furs to trade in the city.
After awhile the settlers cleared their land by hand and started
mixed farming in 1945. Just before the oil came to the town, there was about 70 people
residing in the town. The main street was called 50th Street and 50th Avenue. At
that time there
was two churches, a post office and a school that consisted of two rooms and
educated the children for all the grades.
When the oil companies came to the town and started to drill for oil in 1953,
it was called the Pembina Oil Field. The town started to boom. so this
created many job opportunities for the workers. Workers came from many miles
away. Housing was scarce. So the workers lived in skid shacks until different
housing could be build. The population rose to 2000 people in no time. The
roads consisted of just dirt and as the communties wealth built, those roads
became better surfaced. No gravel just dirt roads to travel on.
In 2003 the population rose to approximately 7000 people.
Today the town offers many recreational opportunities for its
residence. An inside swimming pool, indoor skating rinks for figure skating and
hockey. It boats a Junior hockey team and offers opportunities for
children playing hockey for all
ages. An inside curling rink, bowing alley's, down hill skiing, and cross
country skiing slopes, skate board area are a few more. Many enjoy a 18 hole
golf course with an indoor recreational facility. Paved
walking trails for 6 KM. The North Saskatchewan River provides water enthusiasts
with an opportunity to enjoy: fishing, hunting water skiing, boating and
rafting canoeing. Schools are abundant with a local college for post high school
education.
Each year the town hosts a rodeo with chuck wagon races' and horse racing.
Cattle and horse shows are a common occurance.
It is easy to see why many people call Drayton Valley home.
